New York City: The Distortions Brought on by Covid and Crime Do No Justice To My City
Dispelling Distortions of My City
Every day I take the subway and to see and unmasked individual is a shear anomaly. The looks usually do not bring an outcry but an acknowledgement and most time the person will put a mask on. Walk down any street and you will see the greatest majority of passerby wearing masks. No one screaming "Give me Liberty of Give me Death". We have no problems wearing masks when going into supermarkets We accept what's real in this world and we do our best to do the right thing.
The tales of rampant crime, shootings are exaggerated mostly because there are cameras everywhere. Where once we only read about serious crime now, we watch it on television which brings a much more visceral response one wouldn't get from a newspaper article. Levels of crime are nowhere near what we experienced as a whole and what I experienced personally in the late 80's and 90' when I started as a NYC EMS Paramedic. New York City is still a decent place to live (rental prices for apartments are one of the only downers).
Why am I saying this? Because today NYC logged over 18,000 cases of Covid. It appears rates are doubling now every 2-3 days. But it's not due to any action or non-action by the people of New York. Again, there are no ideological reasons responsible for this surge in cases (the only conspiracy theories that abound are that the N train is always late because they put the slowest drivers on that line). There is no talk of New World Order, Illuminati or that Dr. Fauci is in league with the government because they promised to make him two feet taller. We do our best to take care of our families, raise our kids and enjoy life sometimes.
So please think of this when you see the cases of Omicron go skyrocketing or a random act of crime occurs. We have over 10 million people here and there's bound to be a few bad apples, far fewer than what you would think from watching the nightly news.
On that note I will say good night and speaking for all my fellow New Yorkers, be safe.
